Thank You, A New Program, A New City and More...

Thank you...

An abundant silent auction, delicious tasting stations of chocolates and Chai liquer, free food and drink, high fashion, and some after-hours shopping added up to a wonderful time for all in attendance at the “Celebrate Spring” fundraiser at Saks Fifth Avenue on March 11th. More than 70 City at Peace champions gathered to welcome the warm weather and support this year’s programs raising much-needed funds for City at Peace programs. Thank you to all who came and supported our cause!

New Foster Care Program Begins...

Dream This This month, City at Peace-New York began its third program. This newest program is for teenagers living in foster care and is supported by the Andrus Family Fund. Recruited from more than twelve different agencies, twenty-five teenagers are now engaging in the intense creative process, learning the skills for cross-cultural understanding, conflict resolution, leadership, community action, and the performing arts. City at Peace-New York will also utilize the “transitions framework” to strengthen its efforts to move foster care teens on to independent adult lives. Premiere performances will take place in late September 2009.

City at Peace-Vancouver…

The Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House in Vancouver, Canada has begun organizing and building City at Peace-Vancouver, our eighth city in North America, our fourth City at Peace country, and our first program in Canada. Frog Hollow is a volunteer-driven, community service organization whose goal is to enhance the lives of people and strengthen their communities in order to make neighborhoods better places to live. City at Peace-Vancouver is working to begin its first City at Peace program in 2010.

College Attainment Research Project Begins...

Whats The Story Last year, 100% of City at Peace 12th graders graduated from high school and 95% went on to college. This success is remarkable given that City at Peace provides limited assistance with college preparation or application. In recognition of this success, City at Peace has received a three-year grant from the Lumina Foundation to conduct research on why so many City at Peace youth are graduating from high school and going on to college and what impact City at Peace is having on these outcomes. Research will be conducted by Contexts R+D and the National Center for Children and Families at Teachers’ College of Columbia University.

Upcoming Premieres...

Saks Event

City at Peace premieres will take place this spring in five of our U.S. cities, beginning with our next New York premiere, entitled “Off the Page,” on April 29th. Written and performed by diverse groups of teenagers from the stories of their lives, City at Peace premieres are important and eye-opening community events. This year, more than 200 teenagers will take the stage to raise their voices for a better world. Join us and hear what the next generation has to say about their lives and our communities. If you are interested in attending or getting information about upcoming shows, contact us at 212-924-2300 or info@cpnational.org.
